Protect Your Health and Finances with Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare is a vital program, but it doesn’t cover all your healthcare costs. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) typically covers 80% of eligible expenses, leaving you responsible for the remaining 20%.

What is Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?

Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, is a private insurance policy designed to fill the gaps in Original Medicare coverage. It helps pay for out-of-pocket costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Why Consider Medigap?

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Medigap plans offer comprehensive coverage, helping you avoid significant out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Flexibility: You can choose a plan that best suits your needs and budget, with various coverage levels available.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you have additional coverage can reduce financial stress and provide peace of mind.

What Does Medicare Supplement Insurance Cover?

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans help cover out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) doesn’t. This includes:

  • Deductibles: The amount you pay before Medicare begins to cover costs.
  • Copayments: A fixed amount you pay for a specific service.
  • Coinsurance: A percentage of the cost you pay.

Some Medigap plans may also cover:

Foreign travel emergency: This can help cover emergency medical care while traveling outside the U.S.

Who is Eligible for Medicare Supplement Insurance?

To qualify for a Medigap plan, you must:

  • Be enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
  • Not be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.

You may be eligible if you are:

  • Age 65 or older.
  • Under 65 and receiving Social Security disability benefits.
  • Under 65 and diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
  • Under 65 and diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Important Note: If you have a pre-existing condition and didn’t have continuous health insurance coverage before enrolling in Medicare, insurance companies may delay coverage for up to six months.

What Medigap Doesn’t Cover

Medigap plans typically don’t cover:

  • Long-term care (like nursing home care)
  • Vision or dental care
  • Hearing aids
  • Eyeglasses
  • Private-duty nursing

Prescription Drug Coverage

To get prescription drug coverage, you’ll need to enroll in a separate Medicare Part D plan. Medigap plans sold after 2005 don’t include prescription drug coverage.

Choosing a Medigap Plan

It’s important to choose a Medigap plan that best suits your needs. Consider factors like the specific benefits offered, the monthly premiums, and the insurer’s reputation.
