How Does Medicare Work?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for U.S. adults 65 or older, permanent, legal residents for five years, and younger people receiving disability benefits. Those who receive Social Security disability insurance are eligible after two years. Automatic enrollment is available for people with end-stage renal disease (Permanent Kidney failure) upon signing up. Those with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) are eligible the month their disability starts. As you age, it is essential to help with medical costs.
The Four Parts
Medicare has four parts, each differing in cost and offering specific coverage. Part A and B are called Original Medicare and are provided by the Federal Government. Part C, called Medicare Advantage, carries an annual limit on out-of-pocket costs, and its plans are called HMOs or PPOs. Their coverage is only in some local areas and requires referrals, copays, and coinsurance for health care services.
- Part A: Hospital care, nursing facilities, and related services such as hospice. It carries a deductible, and patients pay some of the bills.
- Part B: Doctor appointments, tests, ambulance services, equipment and supplies, mental health coverage, and outpatient care. Part B carries a deductible, after which you usually pay 20% of the approved cost for your services and supplies.
- Part C: Private insurers cover the same benefits as Parts A & B and often Part D. You must pay your Part B premium, and there may be a separate payment to the insurer, but many offer $0 premiums. Bundled plans provide additional benefits for vision, hearing, and dental care.
- Part D: Brand name and generic Prescription Drug coverage offered by private insurers and requires a monthly premium. Those making higher incomes pay more.
Coverage
Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Routine prescriptions, vision, dental, and hearing are services not covered. You pay a deductible for health care, including coinsurance or copay for medical services and supplies. During select enrollment periods, you can purchase specific plans which cover additional costs not covered. Be aware they vary by state. They include Advantage plans, supplement insurance, and Part D prescription drug coverage.
